Don Wickstrom, RMT

My journey of becoming a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) turned out to be a life changing experience. For me the journey started about year 2000 when I had some minor discomfort and within a couple of years it turned into a major injury.  Now I stay aware of my body and keep myself feeling good through self-care and regular treatments of massage and chiropractic.

I enjoyed seven years as a Journeyman Automotive Technician with Mainway Mazda.  During the last two years of that time I found myself struggling with a major injury to my lower back and legs.  After trying numerous treatment styles, I found two massage therapists who were able to really help me get my symptoms under control and begin the healing process.  Being unable to cope with the physical stress of automotive repair, I decided it was time for a career change.

The first step was to enroll in McKay Massage and Hydrotherapy Program in Saskatoon where I learned about the body which also helped me better understand my injuries.  After 2200 hours of intense learning, I graduated with honours in December 2005; as well earning the massage professionalism and massage clinical proficiency awards.  Having mastered the Massage Therapy Association of Saskatchewan (MTAS) qualification exam, I opened Wickstrom Massage Therapy on February 15, 2006.  My practice remained at Wedge Road Medi Centre for three years until the doctors closed the office.  At this time, I relocated into a home based business which allowed me time to re-evaluate how I wanted my business to look.  I found a partner and made the move into owning a multi-disciplinary clinic.  In 2010 the opening of Symmetry Therapeutics became a reality.  After operating for 6 years on Diefenbaker Drive, the time arrived where I needed more family time.  So on June 1, 2016 I moved Symmetry Therapeutics into a single room within 8th Street Wellness Clinic.

I am now celebrating the completion of 12 years of being an RMT.  A combination of my educational knowledge and personal experience has given me a good understanding of chronic pain.  I have taken many different courses and mentorship over the years to enhance my Myofascial Release treatment style.  This has given me insight into the many levels of integration and compensation the body makes to during periods of injury and or external stresses.  Some of which does not show up as symptoms until many years later.  My goal is to treat each individuals’ unique needs as they present.  I start with listening and asking questions to decide if I am the right therapist for you.  Then I will encourage you to find a “team” of practitioners to guide you through your own healing journey.
